We're currently reviewing a new strategic initiative for Solcode to enter the residential EV charging space by deploying smart 7kW home chargers, integrated into our app platform. This would create a shared charging network with minimal friction for hosts and a significant margin opportunity for Solcode.
Below are three proposed operating models. For clarity, we've included exact annual revenue calculations for each based on the following assumptions:
* Each charger delivers 40kWh/day
* 365 days of operation
* Electricity charged to users at £0.20/kWh
Model 1: Solcode Covers All Costs
- Homeowner Contribution: £0 (device + installation fully funded by Solcode)
- Revenue Share: 80% Solcode / 20% Homeowner
Annual Revenue Calculation:
- Total annual energy: 40kWh/day × 365 = 14,600kWh
- Total income: 14,600kWh × £0.20 = £2,920
- Solcode share (80%): £2,920 × 0.8 = £2,336
- Homeowner share (20%): £2,920 × 0.2 = £584
Model 2: Homeowner Pays Full Setup Cost
- Homeowner Contribution: £700 (device) + £300 (installation) = £1,000
- Revenue Share: 20% Solcode / 80% Homeowner
Annual Revenue Calculation:
- Total income: 14,600kWh × £0.20 = £2,920
- Solcode share (20%): £2,920 × 0.2 = £584
- Homeowner share (80%): £2,920 × 0.8 = £2,336
- Net homeowner gain after cost recovery: £2,336 − £1,000 = £1,336 in Year 1; full profit from Year 2
Model 3: Hybrid Cashback Scheme
- Homeowner Contribution: £700 (device only); Solcode covers £300 (installation)
- Solcode Cashback: £100–£300 depending on usage
- Revenue Share: 20% Solcode / 80% Homeowner
Annual Revenue Calculation:
- Total income: 14,600kWh × £0.20 = £2,920
- Solcode share (20%): £2,920 × 0.2 = £584
- Homeowner share (80%): £2,920 × 0.8 = £2,336
- Homeowner net revenue after average cashback (£300): £2,336 − (£700 − £300) = £1,936
Residential Requirements for Participation
Properties should meet the following conditions to be eligible:
- Private driveway or parking space suitable for guest vehicles
- Household electricity supply stable enough for 7kW charging
- Consistent time availability for external users to charge
- Safe, well-lit and accessible environment
- Willingness to manage booking approvals and ensure space availability
We'd value your feedback on:
- Which model you believe is most scalable and commercially sound
- Whether Model 1's 20% share is sufficient to motivate homeowners if no cost is incurred
- Whether Model 3's cashback model is compelling or too complex to scale effectively
